Body aches are a general symptom, not a diagnosis. They often come from muscle strain, overuse, tension, stress, or minor injury, but aches that affect much of the body are also commonly seen with infections such as the flu or other viral illnesses. Joint-related pain can have different causes, including injury, arthritis, or other inflammatory conditions.
Body aches can also be linked to longer-lasting conditions such as fibromyalgia or other musculoskeletal disorders, and sometimes to medication side effects or less common muscle diseases. The pattern matters: localized pain points more toward overuse or injury, while widespread aches with fatigue, fever, cough, or headache may suggest an infection. Persistent, severe, or unexplained body aches should be medically evaluated, especially if they come with weakness, swelling, rash, trouble breathing, or worsening symptoms.
