Elephantiasis is a severe condition characterized by extreme swelling and thickening of the skin and underlying tissues, most commonly affecting the legs, arms, breasts, or genital area. It is typically caused by chronic lymphatic obstruction, often due to infection with parasitic worms such as Wuchereria bancrofti, transmitted through mosquito bites in tropical and subtropical regions—a disease known as lymphatic filariasis. The blockage of lymphatic vessels leads to fluid accumulation, progressive tissue enlargement, skin hardening, and increased susceptibility to infections. Symptoms may begin with recurrent fever and swelling episodes before advancing to permanent enlargement and skin changes. Treatment focuses on managing the underlying infection when present, reducing swelling through hygiene and compression therapy, preventing secondary infections, and in some cases performing surgical intervention.
