Gallbladder issues refer to conditions that affect the small organ beneath the liver responsible for storing and concentrating bile to aid in fat digestion. The most common problem is gallstones, which are hardened deposits that can block bile ducts and cause sudden, severe abdominal pain known as biliary colic. Other conditions include cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), bile duct obstruction, and, less commonly, gallbladder cancer. Symptoms may include right upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, indigestion, and sometimes fever or jaundice if infection or blockage occurs. Risk factors include obesity, rapid weight loss, high-fat diets, pregnancy, and certain genetic factors. Treatment depends on severity and may range from dietary management to surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) when symptoms are recurrent or complications develop.
