Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by recurrent abdominal pain associated with changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or alternating patterns of both. Unlike inflammatory bowel diseases, IBS does not cause visible damage to the digestive tract but involves altered gut motility and heightened sensitivity of the intestines. Symptoms may include bloating, gas, cramping, mucus in the stool, and a feeling of incomplete bowel movements. The exact cause is not fully understood, but contributing factors may include stress, diet, hormonal influences, and disruptions in gut-brain communication. Although IBS can significantly affect quality of life, it does not increase the risk of more serious diseases such as colorectal cancer.
