Meige syndrome is a rare neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions, primarily affecting the muscles of the face and jaw. It is considered a form of dystonia and most commonly presents with blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking or eyelid spasms) combined with oromandibular dystonia, which involves involuntary movements of the lower face, jaw, tongue, or neck. These muscle spasms can interfere with speaking, eating, and vision, particularly when eyelid closure becomes severe. The exact cause is not fully understood but is believed to involve dysfunction in the brain’s motor control centers, particularly the basal ganglia. Symptoms typically develop gradually in adulthood and may fluctuate in intensity over time.
