Category: Tonsillolith (Tonsil Stones)
A tonsillolith, commonly known as a tonsil stone, is a small, calcified deposit that forms in the crevices (crypts) of the tonsils. These stones are composed of trapped debris such as dead cells, food particles, bacteria, and mucus that harden over time. Tonsilloliths can vary in size and are often white or yellowish. While many are asymptomatic, they may cause bad breath, a metallic taste, throat irritation, difficulty swallowing, or a sensation of something stuck in the throat. Tonsil stones are more common in individuals with deep tonsil crypts or recurrent tonsil inflammation. They are generally benign but can recur if the underlying conditions that promote their formation are not addressed.
