A crush injury occurs when a part of the body is subjected to significant compressive force, often between two heavy objects, leading to damage of muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and surrounding tissues. These injuries commonly result from accidents such as vehicle collisions, industrial incidents, building collapses, or heavy machinery mishaps. Symptoms may include severe pain, swelling, bruising, deformity, numbness, or limited movement, and in severe cases, the injury can compromise blood flow or cause compartment syndrome. Prolonged compression can also lead to crush syndrome, a life-threatening condition in which muscle breakdown releases toxins into the bloodstream, potentially causing kidney failure. Immediate medical evaluation is essential to assess tissue damage, control bleeding, restore circulation, and prevent serious complications.
